I’ve had a wonderful response to the video for this typewriter. It was a fun–and RARE–thrift store find. Certainly the best typewriter I’ve ever found in a thrift store. So happy.

At the 2:53 mark in the video, I say: “I was trying to get to work on time. Which I was a little late, but that’s another story.” Here is that story.

With the typewriter and bonus table safely stowed in the back of my car, I was about a mile from work. I take the back roads to work because I hate the freeway to work. But ahead of me, I saw the road was blocked off with police cars. A large truck was blocking my view beyond that. I cursed, not knowing the next best way to get to work from that point. But as I turned around, I thought better of my concern only for myself, and I wished out loud that everyone was okay. However, the situation for those involved didn’t look good.

I arrived to work about 10 minutes late, but my conscience was the only one there to reprimand me. So I settled into work without another thought.

Less than two hours into my day, a call came from our Library Director. Primo, a co-worker with a smile as big as his personality, was hit by a car. He didn’t make it. When the story hit the newspaper website, it revealed that he was hit by a tow truck while crossing the street. The driver was blinded by the early morning sunlight.

Primitivo Martinez was 69. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees, and had the thick New York accent to prove it. When we worked together my first year at the library, there was not a single day that he didn’t make me smile. He was known for singing badly to hits from the past as we pulled book requests in the morning. He had this strut like he was happy to be alive, like the world was filled with rainbows. He was so full of life. All of us who knew him will miss him greatly. Those of you who didn’t get the chance to meet him missed out on one of the good people in this world.

Keep singing, Primo. Rest in peace, my friend.
